Remember back in the day when layering Garage tank tops with lace at the bottom underneath t-shirts was cute? Well those days are long gone and layering now has a mind of its own! It has now become a complex task of layering different fabrics and prints to create an added dimension and new looks with clothes you want to wear all the time. Here's one take on the layering trend:
Layering by thistooshallpass1 featuring a boatneck shirt
Take a floral shift dress (Aleila Tunic). Throw a neutral coloured blouse over top (Equipment blouse in caramel) and layer it under a nubby sweater (Cacharel wool heavy knit sweater) that picks up a colour from the dress. This is a great way to take a fancy dress into the daytime by throwing a sweater over top. The shirt adds a great extra layer as the collar of the shirt poking out from the sweater makes the look more pulled together.
Throw a dense wool boyish coat (Rachel Comey Cabot coat) overtop with low lapels that do not interfere with the collar of the blouse. Here, the coat is a darker shade of green than the colour of the dress. Finish off the look with an easy cross-body bag (Michael Michael Kors Mango Crossbody), a gold cuff (House of Harlow antler wrap), and an elongated gold ring (YSL arty gold glass-plated ring). The black low profile booties (Rachel Comey Penpal) have a heel that picks up the colour of the neutral blouse and also match the darkness of the coat.
This is a great look that combines pieces that are easily found in your closet and highlights one way of mixing different colours that work well together. A piece of clothing should always connect to another and by doing this, what can at first look like mismatched pieces are all tied together by a common thread. The boyish jacket and collared shirt are made more feminine with the addition of a floral dress, gold jewelry and hardware, and a chunky knit in a punchy orange.
